In Conversation with Deepak Chopra Sharing a Powerful Bedtime Routine to Fall Asleep Immediately (originally published at Psychology Today)

A Nature-Based Ritual for Falling Asleep Fast.

As someone with ADHD, my mind is always moving a mile a minute—jumping from one thought to the next. In a recent conversation with Deepak Chopra at the Sages and Scientists Symposium, I shared a powerful bedtime routine to fall asleep fast!

I often ruminate before bed—about the emails I forgot to send, the looming deadlines I’m not ready for, or the relationships that feel strained—so I created this ritual through constant experimentation and tinkering to finally improve my sleep.

Nature's Lullaby

This imaginative ritual calms your mind, eases tension in your body, and sets the stage for deep, peaceful sleep. The goal isn’t to follow this exactly but to imagine it in your own way—what would it feel like, look like, sound like, and smell like? Let your mind explore.

Whether you picture yourself climbing onto the back of a bee, soaring through the clouds on an eagle, or diving into the ocean with a whale, the possibilities are endless.

Through vivid sensory imagery of the natural world—its textures, scents, and sounds—you align with ancient rhythms your body instinctively understands. This gentle immersion activates your calming parasympathetic nervous system, easing your heart rate and relaxing your muscles. Like nature itself, this practice restores balance, grounding both mind and body as you drift into restorative sleep.

Here’s How Works:

1.  Shrink and Climb On: Close your eyes and imagine yourself becoming so small that you can climb onto the soft, fuzzy back of a busy bee—or any creature you choose.

2. Open Your Senses and Explore: Let your curiosity awaken as you glide through the air and into the heart of glowing flowers. Open all your senses:

  • See the vibrant colors of petals glowing under the sunlight, specks of pollen glimmering as they float through the air like golden dust, and the petals shifting softly as the bee dips into and out of each bloom.
  • Feel the soft hairs beneath your feet and the steady breeze from the bee’s wings.
  • Smell the sweet, changing scent of each flower as the bee moves about.
  • Hear the gentle hum of the bee, a steady rhythm that blends with the quiet sounds of nature.

3. Drift into Calm: As the bee moves from one bloom to the next, allow the soothing hum and the vibrant beauty of nature to carry your mind deeper into calm, gently guiding you toward restful sleep.

Why does this work so well?

This ritual isn’t just some woo-woo thing; it’s rooted in solid neuroscience. Basically, when we ruminate, our brains get stuck in a loop, thanks to the default mode network (DMN). This neural network loves to keep replaying our worries and anxieties. But by using imaginative visualization, we can shift our attention and break free from that cycle.

Think of it like this: we’re redirecting our brainpower towards focused curiosity instead of getting lost in worry. This helps dial down the DMN’s activity and fires up the prefrontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for executive functions and cognitive control. It’s like taking the reins of our minds and steering them away from those unwanted thoughts.

Plus, when we combine multi-sensory visualization with focused attention, we tap into a meditative state. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is all about relaxation and restoration. It’s like hitting the ‘chill’ button for our minds and bodies. This translates into a slower heart rate, relaxed muscles, and a better chance of getting some truly restful sleep.
